How long do teeth whitening results last?

cosmetic dentistry McKinneyTeeth whitening is a tremendously popular cosmetic dentistry treatment because it offers dramatic results with a minimal investment of time and resources. However, in pursuing this treatment, it’s important that patients recognize the results of this treatment are not permanent. They only last for 4-6 months. If you want to maintain your brighter, whiter smile, you’ll need to work with your dentist periodically to refresh the results.

Teeth whitening treatments use bleaching gels to permeate the surface of the teeth in order to release stains and yellowing brought on by age and other considerations. The bleaching gels are usually applied to the teeth via plastic trays worn by patients. Some patients may receive teeth whitening at a dental office, while others may choose an at-home system for more convenience.

If your dentist initially administered teeth whitening in the office, you may not need to return there every time you need a refresher. You may be able to switch to at-home treatments. Check with your dentist to see what is recommended in your case.

Although you will still need to redo your teeth whitening from time to time, there still are a few things that you can do to keep your smile as white as possible in between these sessions. Be conscious of what you eat and drink, as some foods and beverages (think coffee, tea, red wine) can stain the teeth, undoing the effects of teeth whitening. Smoking has a similar influence on tooth color, so if you’re taking advantage of cosmetic dentistry treatments like teeth whitening, you may want to consider giving up this habit. Good oral hygiene habits also generally help the appearance of your smile, so make sure that you’re keeping up with brushing and flossing, as well as routine checkups and professional cleanings.

If you want to extend your teeth whitening results, make sure that you schedule touch-up treatments periodically. Have you noticed that your teeth have gotten dingy since you initially had them whitened? Contact our office at Thompson Dental to learn more about boosting your results.
